Typically think that we have an emotion that leads to physiological changes. James-lange theory of emotion- events in the world lead to physiological changes, and emotions are result of becoming aware of changes in our body. Facial feedback- people who express certain changes that correspond with certain emotions are likely to experience that emotion (furrowed brow, pencil in mouth for smiling while watching videos) Schachter-singer theory of emotion- emotions must be the confluence of physical arousal. Attribution studies- inject participants with epinephrine, confederate either acts either sill or angry. Participants" hearts are all pounding, but same responses can report different emotions. Misattribution studies- participants walk over dangerous bridge, and attractive research assistant talks to some right after the bridge and give them her number (all different), and some later afterwards in the parking lot. Theory was that the participants would fuse their excited states with attraction to the woman.
