PSYCH 10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Circadian Rhythm, Inattentional Blindness, Zeitgeber
Document Summary
Consciousness: awareness of ourselves and our environment. Our awareness is different from that of animals. Psychology was historically the study of consciousness. Sometimes, unconscious patients have responses to conversation in the brain. Bene cial because it enables us to direct our attention to important details only. E. g. we can catch a ball without having to consciously calculate its trajectory. Deliberate actions that we know we are doing. Automatic actions that we are not aware of. E. g. woman with brain damage, but no eye damage, was able to use her eyes to help her take actions such as putting male in slots. Conscious high track: visual perception track (describing mail and slot) Unconscious low track: visual action track (judging the size and distance to put mail in slot) We can selectively choose what to focus on. Cocktail party effect: when we focus on a speci c conversation when other conversations are happening around us.
