Major depressive disorder (mdd: person experiences two or more weeks with five or more symptoms, at least one of which must be either 1) depressed mood 2) loss interest or pleasure things you typically enjoy (anhedonia) in. Can have major depressive episode but never have one again. Persistent depressive disorder: person experiences mildly depressed mood more often than not for at least 2 years, along with at least 2 other symptoms. Hard to treat, not as responsive to medication. Always depressed, but sometimes will be even more depressed. Bipolar disorder: high highs and low lows, manic depressive illness. Findings that any theory of depression must explain. Women"s risk of major depression is nearly double men"s: rumination - thoughts get stuck in our heads. Most major depressive episodes end on their own: without any treatment. Stressful events related to work, marriage, and close relationships often recede depression: how our environments change the brain.
