PSYCH 10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Social Loafing, Social Facilitation, Group Polarization
Document Summary
Advantages to being part of a group: Must identify other groups as friends (suppliers) or foes (competitors) Ex: sororities, fraternities, student groups, sports teams. Normative influence: our tendency to conform in order to fit with the group. Informational influence: our tendency to conform when we assume that the group is right. Social identity theory: ingroups" consist of individuals who perceive themselves to be members of the same social category and experience pride through their group membership. Ingroup favoritism: people are more likely to favorably evaluate and privilege members of the ingroup more than members of the outgroup. Cheaters pose a risk to group stability. Social facilitation: the presence of others generally enhances performance. Tendency to view outgroup members as less varied than ingroup members. Zajonc"s model social facilitation can enhance or impair performance. If the dominant response is relatively easy, the presence of others will enhance performance.
