Document Summary

We know this is meiosis because we can see the crossing over event which only happens in meiosis, we don"t see the interaction between the homologous pairs. 12 chromatids and 6 chromosomes created by dna synthesis of cell division. The outcome of meiosis is a reduction in chromosomes, so it"s called a reduction division. In most plants and animals, the original cell is diploid and the four daughter cells are haploid. In animals the daughter cells become gametes via a process called gametogenesis. Anaphase 2 separation of sister chromatids without replicating them again to end up with haploids. Haploi d number is 3 then the diploid number is 6. Mitosis you don"t want variation; you want new liver cells or identical skin cells. Meiosis you want as much variation as possible. In many sexually reproducing species, gametes from different individuals combine to form offspring, a process called outcrossing.
