Document Summary

Fatty acid tails can be altered by changing chemical relationships in bonds. Unsaturated fats: 1 + double bonds, liquid at room temperature. Saturated fats: no double bonds, solid at room temperature. Phospholipid bilayer with unsaturated fats is more permeable to oxygen and carbon dioxide. Permeability can be altered with saturated and unsaturated fats. Phospholipids in phospholipid bilayer can routinely shift and change position, but don"t cross membrane. This is because they are not monomers, so they are not bound with chemical (covalent) bonds. Concentration gradient moves from high to low concentration. Passive transport does not require an input of energy and there is little control over what is transported and to where. Active transport required an input of energy and has total control over what is transported and to where. Random movement / diffusion = passive transport (only needs a concentration gradient, no energy)
