Document Summary

No subject exists in isolation = there are connections between subjects. Chemistry is tied to history and economics. Chemistry is the study of matter, energy, and the relationship between the two. Matter is anything that has mass and occupies spaces. Scientists follow a set of guidelines known as scientific method. Observation becomes a law or a hypothesis becomes a theory. A substance is a form of matter that has definite composition and distinct properties, either a compound or element. Substances differ from one another in composition and may be identified by appearance, smell, taste, and other properties. A mixture is a physical combination of two or more substances. A homogeneous mixture is uniform throughout (also called a solution, ex. seawater, apple juice) A heterogeneous mixture is not uniform throughout (ex. trail mix, foggy air, chicken noodle soup) Water is a pure substance, can exist in gas, solid, or liquid.
