NURS 3234 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Likert Scale, Foley Catheter, Mattress
Document Summary
Working with residents in long term care can be physically demanding. You will be called on to assist many residents who have impaired mobility. Over the course of a day"s work you may assist residents with mobility tasks dozens of times. Not only the resident"s safety but also your own will be at risk if you do not master the skills needed for lifting a person safely. Statistics show that care providers in long term care facilities are twice as likely to suffer an on-the-job injury as workers in industry. Adding to the risks is the fact that you are not just lifting items that remain inert as you move them. Instead, you are moving human beings, who are often frail. And, human beings often cannot be grasped firmly. They may twist and turn in your grasp, or become suddenly uncooperative.
