Document Summary

Most of us have a 24-25 hour natural cycle. We sleep for about of our life. Restoration: we need it to restore functions of the brain. What doesn"t make sense: different people need different amounts of sleep. College student, randy gardner, stayed up for 12 days straight. Once he slept a full night, he was fine. Doesn"t show that it is a need. Awake when safe, sleep when can"t function as well. A tom cat is only awake for 6 hours. They get their needs out of the way and fight for the rest. We wouldn"t get very much accomplished in the rest of our time. Evidence for both: animals will die if they get no sleep, but no proof that we need as much sleep as we feel we do. First scientific work by: kleitman and dement. Desynchronization of brain waves (alpha waves), paralyzed besides muscle twitching, rapid eye movements, erections.
