SOCI 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Antonio Gramsci, Regular Language, African-American Culture
Document Summary
How does culture shape our societies and identities: we have a mainstream culture as well as subcultures within the mainstream, and countercultures that go against the ideals of the mainstream. Mainstream culture: the most widely shared systems of meaning and cultural tool kits in a society. Nationalism: pledge allegiance in classrooms, sing the national anthem before every game: subcultures. Smaller groups with shared beliefs, preferences and practices who distinguish themselves from the mainstream. Football and basketball is very mainstream: countercultures. Groups whose ideas, attitudes, or behaviors are in direct conflict with the mainstream culture or who actively contest the mainstream culture. Did not want to be accepted, wanted to go against the mainstream and be their own separate group. Wanted to be accepted eventually, but had to fight the mainstream: code-switching to get their rights. Changing how you talk and act based on changes in the situation you are in. Formality when emailing professors vs informality when texting friends.
