Document Summary

Hermann von ebbinghaus"s classic studies of memory. Nonsense syllables : created long list of meaningless abbreviations, shuffled and tried to memorize large selection of them to beat of metronome. Forgetting curve : as time elapsed since learning increases, recall decreases asymptotically. Takeaway: one can objectively study memory in a human being; showed what forgetting looks like. Serial position effect/curve: if given a list of names, words, etc. , participants will recall the first words (primary effect) and the last words (recency effect) much better than the words in the middle. Proves that position of item in a list contributes to ability to recall it. Results from sensory input, takes place before encoding. Rehearsal: primary method of containing an item in stm. Encoded and placed into ltm (if perceived as important) Retrieval pulls items out of ltm and briefly stores them in stm/wm. Holds only a few items (7 +/- 2)
