Hwe uses observed allele frequencies to predict genotype frequencies. For a gene that exists as 2 alleles. Extra homozygotes than expected which means the population is not in hardy-weinberg. Processes that violate the assumptions of hardy-weinberg equilibrium. The source of all variation, but a slow process; unlikely to disrupt hwe. Can select for some genotypes and against others, changing the frequencies. If the population being studied actually consists of two subpopulations and most mating occurs within subpopulations, they can produce extra homozygotes. College students of men and women (t-shirt odor; hla gene) Choosing dissimilar mates produces a population with extra heterozygotes. Can bring in genotypes from a neighboring population. Transfer of alleles into/out of a population as a result of the movement of fertile individuals or their gametes. Can counteract the loss of genetic variation caused by drift. Can oppose natural selection and adaptation by bringing in non-adapted alleles.
