Competence: the knowledge and implicit awareness that speakers of a language possess and utilize to communicate effectively in that language. ** competence can only be inferred, assume competencepeople first. Communicative partners elicit sending/receiving behaviors according to their needs. Linguistic competencies: phonologic: recognition & production of sounds that convey meaning, as receivers: Infants are equipped to perceive all sounds in all language: over the 1st year of life, that skill becomes language-specific. Perceptual narrowing: sounds and faces that reoccur are distinguished, while the others lose salience (the ones that are not useful, drop out: as senders: First attempts at speech may be near misses (approximations of speech) Phonological processes - typical child"s attempt to simplify production task sound produced may take on feature(s) of target sound, ex: gog for dog . Phase 1: infants differentiate faces: eyes open vs eyes closed. Phase 2: we"re both engages with an object and so with each other.
