Hendra & Nipah Virus
❖ Causes encephalitis to pneumonia to death (75% case fatality rate with and without
support)
❖ Can recover from disease, but it can come back and kill you (even months later – years
later)
❖ Predominantly effects horses
❖ Main vector & host = bats
❖ Nipah – zoonotic disease
o Bats have antibodies against the virus
o Outbreak: driver = cultural/agricultural practices date palm sap is collected
and sold; as sap drips out of tree and into pot, fruit bats drink the juice and may
contaminate it with saliva/urine person drinks it transmit to other humans
through saliva/bodily fluids

❖ Lack of vaccination predominately in developing countries without the infrastructure
necessary
❖ Rash
Mumps
❖ S America, China
❖ Inflammation of breasts and ovaries
❖ Vaccine given in conjunction w/ measles and rubella vaccine (all 3 = clusters)
❖ Day cares susceptible, Disney World, college campus, dormitories, schools, prisons,
military personnel… high concentrations of populations in close contact w/ each other
❖ Mild fever, fatigue
❖ Detrimental post puberty, especially for males
❖ Rates of infertility increased
Rubella- German Measles
❖ Rash, fever, swollen glands
❖ Contagious viral infection
❖ Effects children, adults
❖ 90% chance of babies having CRF if pregnant mom has it
❖ hearing loss, blindness, and other developmental problems
