The social exchange approach-the 4 basic assumptions: all social behavior is a series of exchanges. Social excahnge: we bring resources to the table such ad, trade resources, as long as costs seem lower or equal, exchange will be seen as fair and balanced, often an unconscious element. Symbolic interaction: addresses-every day behavior of individuals, examine our beliefs, ideas, and attitudes of daily life and our families etc. For example, a father playing sports with children is seen as good father involvement: understanding the making of meaning through symbols and symbolic behavior. The symbolic interactionist approach- using this approach the family is studied as a unit of interacting personalities. 4 basic assumptions: families and marriage must be studied in their own context (not study from animals, family and marriage can only be understood in context of social setting (ie language) in which they exist.
