Assessment - an ongoing process of collecting information about a given object of interest according to procedures that are systematic and substantively grounded. Typically involves appraising or estimating the level or magnitude of some attribute of a person. You can learn all about how a language works, but not be able to use it functionally. Acquisition means learning how to apply it and do it. Design it to provide feedback that advances student proficiency. Create assessments that are more authentic and real. Not all assessment is accomplished through testing. This is because assessment involves appraising or estimating the magnitude of some attribute systematically and need not quantify by explicit means a given performance in a given domain the way testing does. All testing is assessment but not all assessment is testing. Good teachers are always making appraisals of student performances.
