If we do not debate, our opinions become habits based on long held beliefs or traditions rather than based on reason. Helps us to refine or change our beliefs based on intelligent reasons. Or helps us to make more intelligent arguments in favor of our beliefs. Rationality implies that there is a correct way to judge the value of something. These judgements are subjective and we arrive at them through a political struggle.
