Recorded in the 1950s by oswald white bear fredericks and his wife naomi, the story originates from the hopi (people of peace) people of northern arizona (whose village oraibi is recorded to be as old as 1150 ad). Initially, only the mind of the creator, taiowa, existed until he created sotuknang (so-called nephew). Taiowa used sotuknang as his agent to establish nine universes by first instructing him to gather waters to make the land/sea and air to make the winds/breezes. The fourth act of creation was the creation of life; thus sotuknang created. Spider woman, giving her the power to create life. She did so by mixing earth and saliva and singing the creation song to make the two beings poqanghoya (to solidify the earth) and. Both were despatched to the poles of the earth to keep it rotating. Spider woman continued using earth, saliva, and the creation.
