Life expectancy is higher for whites than nonwhites. Health span: number of years that a person can expect to live while in good health: prevalence of serious disabilities among the older population has not declined much. Gerontologists: social and biological scientists who specialize in the study of aging. Result of falling fertility rates and mortality rates: fertility: number of births in a population. Parents finish raising their youngest child before their grandchildren arrive: horizontal bonds of kinship have shrunk, ties with relatives in the same generation as one, vertical kinship ties have increased, ties with relatives in preceding or following generations.
