Kazan and the creation of empire: elusive empire readings, process of expansion. Late 1400-1500 the horde splinters into many smaller khanates. Conditions of early modernity: expand in order to get into those markets, pursuit of wealth, foreign technology, russia"s participation in the great hunt, fur exports. Dynastic reason: determination of romanov that its patrimony will occupy place of power in world: as an autonomous and expanding, rather than colonized state, peter the great, aware of swedish expansion.
