Two process for how children use and adapt their schemes: assimilation: incorporating new information into existing schemes, accommodation: adjusting schemes to fit new information and experience. As children assimilate new information and experience, they eventually change their way of thinking to accommodate new knowledge. Allows children to develop complex systems schemes. How children shift from one stage or thought to the next. Disequilibrium: rapid cognitive growth & change (cognitive discomfort when new information. Reflex responses are modified as a result of infant"s experiences. Infants become more efficient in using repeated reflex responses. First learned adaptations and deliberate actions appear. Infant begins to coordinate sensory input & motor output. Learns about the association between random events and outcomes. Repeats actions to produce a response from an object or person.
