Culture is reflected in attitudes that people have and the way they interact with children. Culture is manifested in parent"s beliefs, values, and goals for their children, and these in turn influence the context in which children develop. People in all cultures tend to be ethnocentric - favoring their own group over others. The comparison of a culture with one or more other cultures. Goal: such comparison(s) provides information about the degree to which children"s development is similar, or universal, across cultures, or the degree to which it is culture-specific. Individualist cultures: personal choice, intrinsic motivation, self-esteem, self-maximization. Collectivist cultures: connectedness to the family & other close relationships, orientation to the larger group, respect & obedience. A grouping of people with similar occupational, educational, and economic characteristics.
