Collective consciousness: all the beliefs and feelings commonly held by most people in a society which gives rise to an institution with its own authority. Organic solidarity: solidarity based on dol & therefore the differences among individuals: modern (secular) societies, high dol, need for interdependence socially, low collective consciousness, restitutive laws & sanctions focused on restoring relationships. Mechanical solidarity: solidarity based on collective/common consciousness & therefore the similarities among individuals: pre-modern (traditional, religious) societies, little to no dol, everyone doing similar work, high collective consciousness, repressive laws & sanctions focused on punitive measures. Egoistic suicide: individual becomes disconnected from society: those who lack integration in religious, domestic & political societies are likely to commit suicide, they are too individualistic.
