Document Summary

Many of the first operating systems were device dependent and proprietary. A device-dependent program is one that runs only on a specific type of make-up of computer or mobile device. Ex: ios only runs on apple made devices. Today, many operating systems (not all) are device-dependent. A desktop operating system is a complete operating system that works on desktops, laptops, and some tablets. Developed in late 1980s, windows has undergone many iterations. Windows is device-dependent, meaning it will run on most intel/amd computers, regardless of manufacturer. Windows is closed-source, meaning it uses code that is proprietary and kept secret to prevent its use or modification by other entities. The latest versions of windows offer these features: Support for input via touch, mouse and keyboard. Email app, calendar app, and browser included. Photos, files, and settings you can sync with. Enhanced security through an antivirus program, firewall, and automatic updates.
