Media ideologies affect our experiences with media and with each other as we interact through media. An understanding of experience is essential to understanding the meaning of communication media in our lives. Medium ideologies are a set of beliefs about communicative technologies with which users and designers perceive media structure and meaning. We interpret the actions of others based on our ideas about appropriate and possible uses of media. Complex social factors determine what uses of media are acceptable. Media ideologies are shaped in relation to other media. People determine what uses of media are appropriate by idioms of practice. By idioms of practice i mean that people figure out together how to use different media and often agree on the appropriate social uses of technology by asking advice and sharing stories with each other (p. 6) People encounter social problems and consult others to figure out solutions. People learn by watching what others do.
