28 views3 pages

Document Summary

The idea of authorship in intellectual property is not natural. The concept of authorship found in the u. s. law promotes and reinforces power relations. Medieval church scholars placed the value of the copyist above that of the original author. In the 17th century, writers were seen as craftsmen. First british copyright law passed in 1710 (the statute of anne), gave limited monopoly rights to book publishers. The definition of book from the 18th century lists the author as one of many contributors to the final product. Among the other, equally important contributors were scholars, papermakers, type setters, proof readers, publishers, and book binders. The idea that the originality of the author added value did not emerge until the second half of the 18th century (first u. s. property law in 1790) Locally produced; tied up with national identity. Shipped elsewhere, but only sold via their store in barbados or online.
