Alexander the great: at age 23, conquers asia minor, i/p, egypt, etc. Largest territory ever conquered @ time alexander dies at 33 territory divided amongst generals into hellenistic kingdoms. Seleucid kingdom: modern iran, iraq, syria, s turkey. 198 bce: i/p conquered by seleucids from ptolemaic. Hellenism (greekism) : blend of old mideast culture w/ new greek culture spread voluntary, not forced upon locals. Lingua franca (spoken language) = koineh : mix of greek & aramaic. Monarchies : ruled according to greek norms not democratic: kings, but had. Hebrew bible translated to koineh democratic features : voting but limited to elite men, local rule thru bouleh slavery played significant role. Polis = city structured according to greek norms, urbanization. Immigration: greece = poor greeks settle in mideast. Religion: syncretism = fusion of local mideast gods w/ greek gods. Tomb of absalom: jerusalem, greek ionic columns. Married rival persian king"s daughter & encouraged generals to marry into rival families.
