PHYSIOL 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Smooth Muscle Tissue, Conformational Change, Myelin
Document Summary
The nucleus is in the cell body which have dendrites which increase the surface area. Information comes in the dendrites and the cell body. The two types of signals are different based on where they are occurring and also what the purpose of them is. Each neuron is an integrating of a signal. Typically receives signals from more than one type of cell. Graded potential change means it varies based on how many neurotransmitters are released (ie. how strong the stimulus is) The axon has the ability to make action potentials. It is a large depolarization of the membrane that will only occur if there has already been a certain amount of depolarization prior. So you have to have an enough amount of graded potential to reach this point, called a threshold. Then very specific voltage gated ion channels will open.
