Psychosis: loss of contact with reality, including disorganized thinking, false beliefs, or seeing or hearing things that are not there. For test scores to be valid, test-takers should be similar to the original group or sample. Psychological assessment: gathering information and drawing conclusions about the traits, skills, abilities, emotional functioning, and psychological problems of an individual. Four main methods: observations, interviews, psychological tests, inventories. Observations can be formal/informal & structured & specific & subjective. Behavioral clues & characteristics have diagnostic significance: mode of dress, scars or tattoos, choice of jewelry, posture, facial expression, speech patterns. Mhp learns about client and his/her history, current situation, personality. Verbal / nonverbal behavior provide important clues to analyze. Look for evidence of emotions (anxiety, hopelessness, frustration, or anger) while client talks. Identify clients strengths helps them understand that they have positive qualities and supportive relationships hope and motivation. Vary in degree of structure / formality: most formal formal standardized (less subjective to interviewers" biases)
