Empathy and helping: participants watched a video of a woman and her children who had been hurt in an accident. Recovering in a hospital: while watching the video, participants" facial expression and heart rate were measured, participants showed different responses. Some, an increase in heart rate and wincing expressions. Others, heart rare deceleration and a sympathy expression. Pinched and raised eyebrows, rounded mouth: people showing distress stated lower levels of willingness to help, people showing sympathy stated high levels of willingness to help. Two emotional routes to helping: distress (emotion) Behavior to achieve reduction of own distress: empathy (emotion) Behavior to achieve reduction of other"s distress. Helping others in need: it is tempting to believe that some people are intrinsically more helpful than others. And some evidence supports that view: beirhoff et. al.
