EHS 150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Gestational Hypertension, Amniotic Sac, Miscarriage
Document Summary
Pregnancy, from conception to birth, usually is a 40-week gestation in humans. The 40-week is divided into three 3-month periods, each called a trimester. Many physiological changes take place in the mother to support her developing offspring and to prepare her for lactation. About 2 weeks after fertilization, the developing offspring is an embryo. Beginning at the 9th week of development and continuing until birth, the developing offspring is a fetus. Spontaneous abortion or miscarriage occur if the pregnancy is interrupted prior to the 7th month. Infants born before 37 weeks of gestation are preterm or premature. Infants born on time but have failed to grow normally are small-for-gestational-age. Those weighing less than 2. 5 kg have low birth weight, and less than 1. 5 kg have very low birth weight. Usually develops after the 12th week of pregnancy. Can be life-threatening to the mother and fetus. Energy needs increase during pregnancy to deposit and maintain the new fetal and maternal tissues.
