Often irritable, poor feeders, unresponsive: parents may consequently be less sensitive and responsive to needs. Distressed, emotionally reactive preterm infants especially susceptible to poor parenting. Skin to skin contact helps baby regulate temperature, sleep. Baby blues : feeling sad/cranky 3-5 days after giving birth due to hormones after pregnancy; very common (50-80% of new moms) Newborns can hear, see, taste, smell, and respond to touch. Infant states: different levels of consciousness used to regulate amount of stimulation infant receives. Newborns sleep about 16-18 hours a day during first week of life but they are not in sync with adult sleep schedules. Over time, sleep periods lengthen and sync up with adult schedules. Rem = active sleep: brain waves similar to those in waking states, slight body movements, heart rate, blood pressure, breathing uneven, aids in vision development and learning. Nrem = quiet/deep sleep: body motionless, heart rate, breathing, brain waves slow and even.
