BIOS 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Bile Acid, Mesophile, Glycerol
Document Summary
Anaerobic respiration: bacteria only, variable atp amount, use of something other than oxygen as the terminal electron acceptor. Most common terminal electron acceptor is nitrate. All life depends on the nitrogen cycle. If oxygen is available, they use it but if not, they find an alternative. Pseudomonads are an example of bacteria like this. Gram-negative, small pores in outer membrane, lots of efflux pumps, significant in nosocomial infections, produce alginate, pathogen for patients with cystic fibrosis. ~10% of nosocomial infections are caused by pseudomonads. Grows in soaps, sinks, eye drops, humidifiers, hot tubs, fruits, plants, flowers, contact lens solution. In burn wards, plants aren"t allowed in rooms because the bacteria can grow and metabolize. The surface of the plants are covered with pseudomonads. We can easily get 1,000,000 cells with just 20 generations. Linear growth when plotted on a log scale. Thermophiles, halophiles, barophiles, acidophiles, alkaliphiles, etc. are extremophiles that are not pathogenic.
