Document Summary

Bios 111 disease of the day - pneumonia lecture 19 (2/24/17) Pneumonia is a disease of the lungs. Mucous membranes are where we need to have a thinner barrier than the skin. Located in the lungs, gi, and gu. Characterized by being targeted to mucous membranes. Pneumonia used to be the top killer in the world. Pneumonia is a general term reflecting pulmonary infections. Primarily bacterial but can be fungal or viral. Bacterial: streptococcus pneumoniae is the most important and common. The ~90 serotypes can differ in their capsules chemically. This makes them all react differently to antibodies. Quellung reaction: we stabilize capsules by reacting them with antibodies so we can see how large they are. Vaccines target the most prevalent either 7 or 13 serotypes. Mycoplasma: doesn"t have cell wall, so can be killed with tetracyclines. Pneumococcal and haemophiles influenzae pneumonia are 2 of the most common that can be treated with penicillin and cephalosporins.
