Central idea of si is symbols (things we attach meanings to) Si analyze how social life depends on the ways we define ourselves and others. Society is a whole unit made up of interrelated parts that work together. Smaller parts are examined based on functions/dysfunctions and how it relates to a higher unit. Comte, spencer, durkheim, merton: conflict theory. Society is composed of groups that compete with one another for scarce resources. Culture: language, beliefs, values, norms, behaviors, and material objects that characterize a group and are passed from one generation to another.
