Institutional barriers:
Other:
-why is voting on a Tuesday?
-so farmers could travel to polls on Monday, go home Wednesday, and then go to
markets on Thursday.Tuesday ratchets up the cost to vote.
-what if your polling location is too far?
-
Convenience Voting:
-absentee ballots, mail-in, early-voting.
-lower costs to voting.
-about 2-4% increase in turnout. Statistically significant
-most people who use convenience who would have already voted. Just makes it easier for
them.
-mixed success.
-people who we are aiig to try ad turout iorities, youg folks, etc do’t use
convenience voting, but the dominant groups are taking advantage. Might in fact increase disparity
between representation of minority groups.
Minor parties (3rd parties)
-fairly high support for third parties.
-but in 2016 election, less than 5% of vote went to stein or Johnson
Minority Party requirements:
-ballot access: varies a lot by state but high barriers. Have to get a ton of signatures.
-matching federal funds: 5% threshold. Federal government will give you a certain amount of
money. You have to get 5% of vote.
