PSYC 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Standard Deviation, Central Tendency, Normal Distribution
Document Summary
Not all variables are born equal: measurement scales. Variables differ in terms of which values they can assume. Scaling = variables are measured using one type of scale or another. Lowest measurement level, provides the least amount of information about the variable being measured. Has grouping, relative magnitude, equal intervals between levels, and a true zero. True zero = a point below which is impossible. Work from the lowest level to the highest to determine the type of measurement scale. Relative magnitude and equal intervals and true zero. Scores that represent the center of the distribution. Most common measures are the mean, median and mode. Value most people associated with the average. Most commonly used measure of central tendency. Mean is the sum of all the scores divided by the total number of scores. Middle score of any set of raw scores. If there is an odd score, the median is the middle score.
