Document Summary

Sometimes people can remember entire events that never took place. Interviewer asked participants to recall an event that she had (supposedly) learned from their participants. Assured participants that she had details about the bogus event. Smiles and encourage nods when participants showed signs of remembering the bogus event. Encouraged participants to use guided imagery to foster false memories. Persuaded many participants that they had committed a crime that led to police contact. Many recalled assaulting a person with a weapon and being detained by the police. People rely heavily on expressions of certainty or confidence. People tend to trust memories that are expressed with confidence. More cautious about memories that are hesitant. Evidence suggests that a person"s degree of certainty is an uneven indicator of whether a memory is trustworthy. Certainty and memory accuracy are highly correlated in certain situations. If we try to categorize memories as correct or incorrect based on someone"s confidence we often get it wrong.
