Homeostasis is a dynamic
balancebetween the autonomic
branches.
Rest-and-digest:Parasympatheticactivity dominates.
Fight-or-flight:Sympathetic activitydominates.
Autonomic system controls the whole body.
Parasympathetic slows heart rate down.
Whole body controlled by sympathetic and parasympathetic, governing
most of the systems.
Sympathetic: thoracic and lumbar, extend out and control whol ebody.
Parasympathetic: cervical and lumbar.
One increase the other decrease.
For long term = parasympathetic. Digestive system is a big output from
parasympathetic.
Immediate survival = sympathetic.

Need to know 3 receptors:
Autonomic pathways consist of
two neuronsthat synapse in an
autonomic ganglion.
From CNS, has 2 neurons that reach target tissue.
ganglionic = cluster of neurons in the presynaptic membrane.
Cannot release neurotransmitter (a little different).
Adrenal gland located above kidney.
Adrenal cortex = big steroid hormone, inside has adrenal medulla

Document Summary

Homeostasis is a dynamic balance between the autonomic branches. Whole body controlled by sympathetic and parasympathetic, governing most of the systems. Sympathetic: thoracic and lumbar, extend out and control whol ebody. Digestive system is a big output from parasympathetic. Yi(cid:374) a(cid:374)d ya(cid:374)g: if sy(cid:373)patheti(cid:272) is a(cid:272)tivated, parasy(cid:373)patheti(cid:272) is(cid:374)"t. Autonomic pathways consist of two neurons that synapse in an autonomic ganglion. From cns, has 2 neurons that reach target tissue. ganglionic = cluster of neurons in the presynaptic membrane. Adrenal cortex = big steroid hormone, inside has adrenal medulla (cluster of nervous system, very similar to pituitary gland [anteroir = endocrine; posterior = nervous]) = 100% nervous system, part of sympathetic nervous sytem. Preganglionic neuron releases ach, triggers response to release epinephrine, released by neuron hormones in the adrenal medulla, released to the blood so they work like a hormone similar to the 2 neuron hormone released by the posterior pituitary gland.
