NEU 365D Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Renal Medulla, Distal Convoluted Tubule, Biotransformation
Document Summary
Nephron - structure that allows for the filtration of small molecules (occurs in glomerulus. Drug molecules move into the bowman"s capsule path through nephron. Proximal tubule first - most solute reabsorption (sodium chloride, amino acids, bicarb, etc. ) Save things for the body - of fluid from the bloodstream is filtered (20% of the drug molecules and anything else in the blood) Filter small molecules then select what it wants to keep. Anything not taken out remains in the urine and is excreted. Loop of henle: cortex medulla of the kidney. Descending loop - moving into a more hypertonic environment (impermeable to solute - permeable to water) Salts are being pumped out (maintain high concentration of solute in interstitium of kidney outside of the loop) Drive for water (osmosis) to leave - into the hypertonic environment. Ascending loop - impermeable to water, permeable to solutes (especially na + and cl - )
