T D 301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Human Sexuality, Tony Award, Gender Bender
Document Summary
Queer: not just about lgbtq, learning why what we believe to be true is true, defy traditional ways. It"s about how ppl devise theatre, how to produce theatre. Super cheap tickets because they realize in catholic society, only rich get to watch theatre. Make it easy to rent theatre space: gay sweatshop. Split britches: belle reprieve 1991, streetcar = inspiration, gender bend production. Women played by men: queer theatre. Dipping into avant garde: how might gender bending give deeper understanding of play and tennessee. A lot of early queer theatre was about theatre in troupes. Lesbian pining for a woman, unable to fulfill her wants, commits suicide: reinforces that queerness is sad, depressing, unfulfilling because it"s out of the norm. Asks how sexuality affects reception: how does your personal sexuality affects how you read things? i. e. a queer person vs a straight person reading streetcar will be different. Uses practices that mimic activism: dance, etc.
