Depressive Disorders:
●Everyone feels sad at times in their life
○But these feelings are normally short-lived, e.g., a couple of days or less
●Depression is longer-lasting and interferes with daily life
○Depression causes pain for the sufferer and those close to them
●Major depression
○Severe symptoms that interfere with work, sleep, eating and enjoying life (1 or
more episodes)
●Persistent depressive disorder
○Depressed mood lasting for at least 2 years
●Psychotic depression
○Severe depression present with a form of psychosis, such as delusions or
hallucinations
●Post-partum depression
○Depression after child birth, which can make caring for the child overwhelming
●Seasonal affective disorder
○Depression onset during winter when there is less sunlight; usually lifts during
spring/summer
●Bipolar disorder
○Mood changes cycle from mania to depression
DSM 5 criteria for Major Depressive Episode
●1) ≥5 of the following symptoms have been present during the same 2-week period and
represent a change from previous functioning; ≥1 of the symptoms is either depressed
mood or loss of interest or pleasure. (list)
●2) symptoms cause clinical significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or
other important areas of functioning
●3)Symptoms are NOT due to direct physiological effects of substance or general medical
condition
●Ex of a few symptoms from the list:
○• Depressed mood
most of the day, nearly every day, as indicated by either
subjective report (e.g., feels sad) or observation made by others (e.g., appears
tearful).
○• Markedly diminished interest or pleasure
in all, or almost all, activities most of
the day, nearly every day.
○• Significant weight los
s when not dieting or weight gain (e.g., a change >5% of
body weight in a month), or decrease or increase in appetite nearly every day.
