Document Summary
Declines in five senses, mobility, circulation, stamina, reflexes. Hearing aid, trifocals, cane, cold and out of breath. Cognitive changes: crystallized continues vs. fluid intelligence drops. Terminal drop: six months before death, massive fall off of all skill sets. Lose memory, ability to care for self, change in personality, get lost and wander away, 24 hour care. Depression: declining health, serious illness, death of friends/spouse, nothing to live for, loneliness, feel like a burden, can"t take care of oneself, don"t want to go to a nursing home. Fear of victimization: people take advantage of elderly. Telephone scams, street crime (mugging), elder abuse (kids extorting parents for retirement money). Body: significant declines, can"t do what used to for as long or with some vigor. Most people highly identify with their work role, so retirement is hard. Body transcendence vs. body preoccupation: body is starting to fail and will continue to do so.
