About 20-25% of americans have suffered from a mental illness (understatement due to people wanting to hide their mental illness) Studies show that people that suffer from mental illnesses are more likely to be victims of violent crimes than perpetrators. We need the full range of context to know if someone has a mental disorder and must consider all 3 criteria before coming to a conclusion. We use our own judgement or gut feeling. Once statistical or objective cutoff scores are established they are easy to apply. Typically easy to observe if someone is having difficulty. Individuals may be able to accurately report this.
