Document Summary
Earliest evidence of african archaic human evolution is from a site called jebel. Irhoud in morocco around 300 thousand years ago (one specimen) Huge brain - in the range of modern humans; larger than other archaic humans like h. heidelbergensis. Brain case is more rounded and taller. Concavity and slight convexity at front of mandible. Faintest hint of a chin - a unique characteristic of modern humans (protrusion below incisors - probably developmental byproduct of the retraction of our faces) First trace of a chin anywhere in the fossil record. Not quite fully modern, but more modern than anything seen before. Modern human brow ridges are small and divided. Little concavity that divides the brow ridge into a medial and lateral portion. Omo kibish, ethiopia: 195 kya; 2 crania. More modern than any of the other archaic humans. Large brow ridges, but they are divided.
