Weekly pay checks, reinforces working: variable-interval schedules: reinforces a response at unpredictable time periods, ex. Pop quiz, reinforces studying: fixed-ratio schedules: reinforces a response only after a specified number of responses, ex. Piece/factory work, bonus after every 100 pieces, reinforces making pieces: variable-ratio schedules: reinforces a response after an unpredictable number of responses, ex. Slot machines, reinforces playing the slot game: rates of responding, cumulative responses are highest with ratio schedules, extinction, ratios are the hardest to extinguish, variable ratio schedule is the hardest to extinguish. Shaping behavior: reinforcing successive approximations of a behavior until you reach the desired behavior, ex. Cat taught to use a bell to get food through reinforcement.
