Irritable: anxiety, bi-polar disorder, periods of inexplicable and unbounded joy known as euphoria, periods of depression, anxiety. In analogue studies in rats, uncontrollable stress to the rats causes similar depressive symptoms to those in humans. Stress also has effects on neurotransmitters only in the rats that show depressive symptoms. Antidepressant drugs have worked on these rats: selective breeding has produced subtypes of rats that cause different responses to stress and antidepressant medication. Interpersonal therapy=therapist attempts to understand the problems the patient has with specific relationships and then improve those relationships: antidepressant medications. Interpersonal and social rhythm therapy=a variation on interpersonal therapy developed for bipolar patients. It is based on the fact that episodes are often preceded by: stress, disruptions in social rhythms (sleep disturbance, etc. Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity thi(cid:374)k (cid:455)ou"re great, feeli(cid:374)g o(cid:374) top of the world: decreased need for sleep, more talkative than usual or pressure to keep talking, flight of ideas or racing thoughts, distractibility.
