Habituation: a general process in which repeated or prolonged exposure to a stimulus results in a gradual reduction in responding. Example: moving to the city and being annoyed w all the sounds of traffic when trying to fall asleep but after a few weeks, not even noticing it or hearing it. Sensitization: presentation of a stimulus leads to an increased response to a later stimulus. Example: if your house was broken into in the past, you may be more sensitive to sounds late at night when home alone.
