EC Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Racemic Mixture, Symmetry Element, Enantiomer
Document Summary
The branch of chemistry which deals with three dimensional arrangement of the atoms and molecules and its effect . Enantiomers molecules that are non-superimposible (non congruent) mirror images. A pair of enantiomers have same physical properties bp,mp,heat of formation . refractive index etc so it is very difficult to separate the enantiomers. Compounds which are not enantiomers are known as diasteriomers. Diastereomers have different physical properties and thus not difficult to separate. A mixture of equal amount of enantiomers is known as racemic mixture. Chiral molecules molecules which lack certain types of symmetry. In organic chemistry a compound with a chiral carbon which is carbon with different substituents. Meso compounds these are compounds which have chiral carbons but because of presence of a symmetry element the activity is absent because of internal compensation. Importance of stereoisomerism- there was case of thalodimide in 1958 it was approved as a single compound. But consequently it was founf that it was mixture of enantiomers.
