Corresponds to the shape of the spinal cord in the region: cervical large triangular shaped, thoracic round oval shaped. Lives in anterior median fissure: branched from vertebral artery, supplies sc anteriorly. Lives in lateral sulcus: supplies posterior spinal cord. Posterior intercostal artery (direct branch from the aorta) anastomoses (tops up) with the anterior and posterior spinal arteries. The posterior intercostal artery is directly supplied by the aorta, travels through the intervertebral. Foramen + tops up blood supply in the arteries. The intercostal artery is protected by the costal groove of the ribs with the intercostal artery and nerve. Lie in the epidural space: multiple communicating network venous channels, posterior and anterior intervertebral veins, valveless, root of metastases because they are valveless, there is no one direction of blood.
